ST. PAUL -- A trio of Minnesota state senators is promoting an effort to fight insurance fraud.

The bill would increase fraud penalties and allow insurers and law enforcement officials to share some data in an effort to catch those running fraud schemes. One of the main provisions would go after unscrupulous billing practices.

Two Democrats and a Republican are introducing the measure.

“Insurance fraud is not a Republican or Democrat issue, it is a Minnesota issue and we’ve been working diligently in a bipartisan way to correct fraud issues,” said Sen. Paul Gazelka, R-Nisswa. “These corrections will, in turn, help lower the cost of insurance for all Minnesotans."

Sens. Vicki Jensen, D-Owatonna, and Jim Metzen, D-South St. Paul, joined Gazelka Thursday in announcing their plan.

Insurance officials say fraud costs the average Minnesotans about $1,000 in higher insurance premium costs.
