Trojans end Raiders’ season

Despite giving up just three hits to No. 3 seeded Barnesville in the first round of the 8-1A playoffs, the Lake Park-Audubon baseball team’s season ended with a 3-2 loss Tuesday.

The Raiders (6-9) persevered all the way through to the last out, but the Trojans (11-5) were able to ride out the game for the victory.

“I was very impressed how our players never gave up and stayed in the game until the final run,” said LP-A head coach Taylor Fuhs. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get the key, timely hit early in the game to get some runs.

“We played hard and I commend our players on giving all they had.”

LP-A pitcher Mason Swegarden threw his typical dominating pitches by striking out nine and allowing just three hits.

But four Raider errors led to all of Barnesville’s runs, which were all unearned.

The game ended on a walk-single with one out by Alex McIntyre.

The Trojans struck first with an unearned run in the second inning, while the Raiders took a 2-1 advantage after the top of the sixth.

Swegarden led off with a single and stole second. Dylan Larson railed a one-out double to score Swegarden.

After taking third on a Tim Brekken single, Larson scored on a squeeze bunt by Westin Munson.

But Barnesville tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the frame after a lead-off walk and an error scored the Trojans their run.

Swegarden went 2-3 at the plate, while Larson was 1-2.

“We had our ups and downs, but some key moments stood out in our season,” Fuhs said. “I am very happy with our seniors and how they led our young guys and helped them out along the way.

“Our season maybe didn’t maybe go exactly how we wanted, but I believe we got better as the season progressed, we just needed to be more consistent in all aspects of the game.”
