Holy Rosary Catholic Church's 36th annual Parish Festival takes place today (Sunday) at the Becker County Fairgrounds. The day will kickoff with an outdoor Sunday Mass at 10:30 a.m. Churchgoers are encouraged to bring their own folding chairs. Doors at the Kent Freeman Arena on the fairgrounds will open at 11:30 a.m., and the festival goes until 4 p.m. Events will include a silent and live auction, cakewalk, white elephant, both kid and adult bingo, and a country store with jams, baked goods, and more. There will also be a wide range of concessions available throughout the day.

The annual Looney Daze celebration concludes today in Vergas. Today's events include a collectible car show, outdoor church service, the Vergas Looney Daze Parade, turtle races and water fights. Fair Hills Resort hosts its final Hootenanny of the season on Tuesday, Aug. 19, with a smorgasbord from 6:30 to 7 p.m. and a show at 8:15. Make reservations at 847-7638 or 532-2222. In existence since 1965, this is the longest running musical show in the entire Midwest.

Laker Cross Country hosts the annual Make the Lake practice run around Big Detroit on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Approximately 250-300 high school athletes from around the state will be running. The public is invited to join the run. Meet at 9 a.m. in the Pavilion parking lot. Due to construction, busses will shuttle all runners to East Shore Drive where the practice run will begin. The Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series continues Aug. 19 in the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell, with a performance by Vincent & the Van Gos. The music starts at 7 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the nearby DL Pavilion. Zion Lutheran Church on Franklin Lake hosts a Two For Life Concert, featuring Jay and Jodi Marcum out of Nashville, on Wednesday, Aug. 20. They will present a high-energy, jazzy Gospel experience of classic and contemporary sounds. The performance starts at 7 p.m. Come between 5:30-6:45 for grilled hot dogs with all the trimmings. It is a free-will offering.

The public is invited to an outdoor quilt show, garden tour and tea on Aug. 23 from 1-3 at 4020 4th St., Lake Park. There will be door prizes, gifts to purchase, quilts to vote on, a garden to tour and tea offered throughout the day. The event benefits the Families Forever Scholarship fund. Habitat for Humanity hosts its annual golf scramble Aug. 26 at Forest Hills Golf Course. The event is open to everyone. Registration begins at noon, and the fun beings at 1 p.m., followed by a social, including steak dinner and cash bar. Prizes will be awarded. To register, call 844-5397.

On May 1, 1960, Captain Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting his U2 spy plane sparking one of the most famous international incidents of the Cold War. The latest exhibit at the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, "Top Secret," which opened May 1 and continues through Oct. 31, includes photographs and artifacts from the Cold War Museum about the U-2 Incident.
