Turkey Days begins Friday in Frazee
This weekend, Turkey Days will scramble, crawl, trot, pull, dance, and eventually parade its way across Frazee.
Friday's Opening Ceremony at noon will begin the 55th annual bout of festivity, which will then run throughout the weekend, ending Sunday night.
The theme for this summer's events is "Turkeys on Board...Games." All of Turkey Days' activity will in some way relate to board games.
New this year is Saturday's Teen Beach Blast and Dance, an event that has been in the making for the past few years in an effort to create an activity aimed specifically at the teenage population.
"The only thing there's ever been strictly for teens is the dance," said Bonnie Julius, who is co-chairing Turkey Days this year alongside fellow Frazee resident Karen Gray. "We have plenty of activities for other age groups."
With events like the Carnival, the Fishing Contest and the Tractor Pull aimed at children, and others primarily focused on the adult crowd, planners have long felt the need for something in-between.
And that's how the Beach Blast came to be. Starting at noon down by the lake, there will be a full twelve hours of "fun in the sun," including concessions, games, a DUI simulation, and a dance from 8 p.m. to midnight.
"Hopefully they'll have a good time and feel a little special," Julius said, adding in her desire that the event be made an annual one.
Besides the dance, this weekend will play host to dozens of opportunities to dance, eat, sport your athletic abilities, enjoy music, and check out all the different venues of entertainment across the town.
On Friday, the excitement includes a sand castle contest, the Turkey Cook-Off, the Turkey Crawl, water fights and a street dance.
Saturday's lineup includes the Dolores Smith Memorial Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk, this year's "Clue"-based Road Rally, the always-popular Demo Derby and the Old-Time Dance.
Sunday will see parades of pets, dolls, classic cars, and the final Turkey Days wrap-up, which will be followed by a Pie & Ice Cream Social and, later that evening, music by "Destiny" at the VFW.
