Two bodies found in vehicle in Mississippi River

WINONA, Minn. – Two bodies were discovered submerged inside of a vehicle in the Mississippi River here Sunday afternoon.

Temperatures with wind chill dipped into the teens below zero Sunday morning when authorities were alerted to the possibility of a vehicle that had gone into the river. Winona County Sheriff David Brand said his department received the call shortly before 7:30 a.m. The caller spotted tire tracks that seemed to lead into the river. First responders found a license plate, purse, a broken guard rail and other debris on shore.

Brand said that authorities located the vehicle with help from underwater cameras. Around noon the car was pulled from the river and that is when two bodies, one male and one female, were discovered. Their identities have not been released.

The car and all of its contents were moved into a heated garage for further investigation.

A 36-year-old woman was believed to have been driving the vehicle with three male passengers. The car was seen leaving a Winona tavern around 1:30 Sunday morning.
