Two face new charges after jail escape
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

Two Becker County jail inmates are back in custody after a short-lived escape late Saturday evening.

Sheriff Kelly Shannon said 30-year-old Scott Allan Sellers and 20-year-old Arlan Ray Bergstrom Jr. escaped from the jail by removing a metal plate from the handicap shower, then breaking out a 9-inch-wide window before lowering themselves to the ground.

Sellers’ arm was cut severely by broken glass in the escape.

Shannon said the sheriff’s department caught the two men within the hour, with help from the Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Lake Park, Audubon and Callaway police departments and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Sellers was found hiding behind a residence on Central Avenue, while Bergstrom called to turn himself in and was taken into custody about an hour later.

Sellers was treated for his cuts at a nearby hospital, and both were back at the jail Saturday afternoon.

Both men have been formally charged with one count of felony escape from custody. They each made their first appearances in Becker County District Court Monday morning. Simon George was appointed as Sellers’ attorney, while Andrew Bergen was appointed to represent Bergstrom.

Both men have been remanded to custody pending their next court appearances; their omnibus hearings have both been set for Monday, May 6.

Bergstrom was also scheduled to appear in court this morning on another matter. He was formally charged this morning with one felony count of violating a domestic abuse no contact order (DANCO).

According to the court complaint, investigators discovered that he had placed approximately 10 phone calls from the county jail between April 16-19. All of the calls were made to a woman with whom he had been forbidden to have any contact as the result of a DANCO filed Sept. 26 — the same day he was convicted on three separate misdemeanor counts of domestic assault involving the same woman.

Bergstrom had been incarcerated at the jail as the result of another felony DANCO violation charge involving the same woman.

In that case, a sheriff’s department investigator had spotted the woman with whom Bergstrom was to have no contact, driving a vehicle on Pelican Lane on April 15.

There was a man sitting in the passenger seat who was eventually identified as Bergstrom. He made his first appearance on that charge April 16, and is scheduled to appear at an omnibus hearing on that charge May 6 as well.
