Two killed in Cass County head-on collision
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A Cass Lake couple died Saturday night in a head-on crash in Cass County.
Lisa Collins, 47, was driving a 2003 Kia Spectra while her husband, Timothy, 46, was a passenger in the vehicle. The Kia was headed south on Cass County Road 75 and Leech Lake Route 438 when it was struck by a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Michael Stangel, 27, of Cass Lake, according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol. The accident was reported just after 11 p.m.
The Tahoe had been headed north but swerved into the southbound lane while in a no-passing zone, forcing one vehicle off the road before striking the Kia head-on, the patrol reported.
Stangel and his passenger, Stacy Stangel, 47, of Longville, both suffered serious injuries and were taken to Essentia Health in Fargo. Lisa and Tim Collins died at the scene.
None of the four involved was wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol was detected in Michael Stangel's system, and the incident remains under investigation, according to the patrol report.
Family and friends are now rallying to raise money to benefit the Collins family, which includes their parents, two daughters and grandchildren. Neither Lisa nor Timothy Collins had life insurance, family members said in an online post.
