U-18 squad finish in 2nd place
The U-18 Detroit Lakes softball team finished as runner-up in the regional tournament in Hawley, missing a state berth by one game.
The No. 4 seeded Lakers upset No. 1 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the semifinals 5-2, but fell to Hawley in nine innings 5-4 in the championship game.
They opened with a convincing 4-1 victory over Norman County East.
“The team played well through the tournament and many of the players stepped up and did what they needed to do,” said head coach Tom Vagle. “Beating D-G-F was a big win.”
The Lakers and Hawley dueled to a 3-3 tie after seven innings, forcing an extra inning affair.
A scoreless eighth led to a wild ninth frame, where DL was able to push across the go-ahead run, during the international rules inning.
International rules are invoked after the eighth inning. The final out in the eighth is automatically placed on second base, with DL batting in the top of the inning.
Kennedy Erickson used her speed after a Kyra Vagle suicide squeeze bunt opened the plate to put DL up 4-3.
But Hawley scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game in walk-off fashion.
Emily Schiltz went 3-5 with a run scored for the Lakers, while Rachael Ianiro was 4-5 with a run and RBI.
DL had both Chaz Butz and Emma Maguire pitch, with the former going the first three innings and the latter the final four.
They split the work in the ninth.
Butz went the complete game in the 5-2 win over D-G-F, while Vagle went 3-4 and Macy Kirchner went 3-4 with an RBI.
In the opening round victory over NCE, Vagle was 2-3 with two stolen bases and Ianiro 2-2 with two runs scored. Butz was also the winning pitcher.
