UCB wrestling takes part in Big Bear
The United Clay Becker wrestling team placed 22nd out of 35 teams during the Big Bear Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
The Badgers' 132 pounder, Nick Wamre prevailed Friday winning his first match, while Jarrett Lange, the Badgers' 120-pounder, lost his first match, but had a bye his second match and won his third match.
With a loss in the fourth match, Lange's competition in the tournament ended with a 1-2 record.
The Badgers' 126 pounder, Jimmy Kohler won his second match and finished with a record of 1-2.
The rest of the 106-138 pounders had some tough matches, losing out for the day.
The 145-285 pounders had a full day of matches.
At 145 pounds, Mason Swegarden won his first two matches in the championship bracket. Swegarden then got his second chance this year at a ranked opponent from Detroit Lakes, Parker Jackson.
Swegarden fell by one point to Jackson this time, with a final score of 4-5 (previous loss was 4-3).
Alex Lindsay won his first match of the day and had two tough matches after that, which led him to a record of 1-2.
Mat Pepper won his first two matches of the day. Pepper led 4-1 in his third match. His opponent, Jake Filk of Hutchinson caught Pepper slightly out of position and capitalized to win by a fall.
This was Pepper's first loss this season.
Pepper and Swegarden each won their first round of wrestle backs with dominating authority.
Saturday, the team woke up to slippery road conditions that took the team 45 minutes to travel the normal 20-minute route to the tournament.
After a good night's sleep, Pepper and Swegarden were back at it.
They each won their first matches en route to the finals for 3rd place.
Swegarden held off his opponent in the first period with a 0-0 score. He rode out his opponent the entire second period, before escaping in the third period to defeat his Willmar opponent 1-0 and take bronze.
Pepper had an even match with a Barnesville grappler. His Barnesville foe would choose down and eventually escape, making the score 1-0 against Pepper.
Pepper tied the match in the third period, thus sending the match into overtime. It was difficult for either wrestler to get better positioning, pushing the match into double overtime.
Johnson registered an escape, making the score 2-1. Pepper had his opportunity to do the same, but was unable to escape.
The Badgers will be wrestling in Parkers Prairie Thursday, Jan. 3, starting at 5 p.m.
They will be in the Fertile-Beltrami Tournament Saturday, Jan. 5, as well.
