Here’s an unusual way to show support for cancer research — pink garbage cans.

Jon and Sons Disposal has purchased 200 of the pink plastic containers and for a $25 donation customers can use them for the life of the can.

Jon Christenson, who owns the company, says he joined the campaign in honor of a sister who successfully battled breast cancer and his father, who just ruined 81 and is now dealing with colon cancer.

He donated $1,000 to the Susan G. Koman Beast Cancer Foundation via a $5-per-can donation when he bought the 200 cans.

They are available in 64 gallon and 96 gallon sizes.

Christenson unveiled the “Tough Enough to Go Pink” campaign last week, and by Monday had already signed up more than 50 customers.

His goal is to raise at least $5,000 for the Essentia St. Mary’s Oncology Department.

In addition to raising money, the campaign aims to raise awareness.

The “Kick Cancer to the Curb” effort involves pink garbage cans that replace regular cans.

The cans have an anti-cancer ribbon on the side, and information about the campaign on the inside of the lid.

“We just want to create some money for the local chapter and do some good for residents around here,” Christenson said.

Jon and Sons Disposal is headquartered on County Road 25 and serves a 30-mile radius around Detroit Lakes. The company was launched 14 years and employs seven people.

Call Christenson at 218-849-1225 to order a pink garbage can.
