Unseasonably warm weather breaks records in Grand Forks, Fargo

The recent streak of unseasonably warm weather helped Grand Forks and Fargo set new records Monday.

The National Weather Service reported its Grand Forks office near the UND campus recorded a high temperature of 49 degrees, well above the previous record for the date of 42 degrees set in 1994.

Hector International Airport in Fargo recorded a high of 51 degrees. That bested the previous record of 45 degrees set in 1959.

Grand Forks International Airport also reached a new record temperature for the date, with thermometers climbing to 47 degrees. The previous record was 42 degrees set in 2006.

The weather service forecast calls for chances of snow beginning Tuesday night, but temperatures are expected to remain well above normal for at least the next week. Grand Forks' normal high temperature for this time of year is about 18 degrees.

Forecast

Here is the weather service's forecast for Grand Forks:

- Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 24. North wind 13 to 16 mph becoming north 5 to 8 mph. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph.

- Tuesday night: A 20 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. South southwest wind between 7 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

- Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 35. West southwest wind between 7 and 9 mph.

- Wednesday night: A 30 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

- Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 32.

- Thursday night: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 22.

- Friday: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 31.

- Friday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18.

- New Year's Eve: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 31.
