Valare L .Hammer, 79, of rural Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at her home, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Valare was born to Franz and Agnes (Winter) Sivertson on July 21, 1930 in Detroit Lakes. She attended country school at District 81 in Shell Lake Township and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. Valare attended Normal Training in Park Rapids, and then attended Bemidji State University, receiving a teaching degree.

Valare was united in marriage to Leonard Hammer on February 6, 1954 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Frazee. Valare taught for 20 years at various schools, which included District 81, Frazee and Ponsford. Valare and Leonard raised strawberries at Hammer's Berry farm for over 50 years.

Valare enjoyed painting, quilting, needlework, reading and traveling. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Height of Land.

Surviving Valare are her husband, Leonard Hammer of rural Detroit Lakes; three sons, Marvin (Blanche) Hammer of Woodbury, Minn., Gary (Arlene) Hammer of Burtrum, Minn., and Russell (Vicki) Hammer of Belgrade, Minn.; six grandchildren, Wesley Hammer, Andrew Hammer, Michelle (Chris) Welte, Annette (Pat) Mohs, MaryAnne (Nathan) Toutges and Amie Hammer; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Vaida (Thurman) Wettlund, Vernette Leslie and Velda (Charles) Deike, all of Detroit Lakes; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Valare in death were her parents and a sister, Vallie Carlson.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church-Height of Land, rural Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Richard Boehnke officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes.
