Former Detroit Lakes resident Valerius Elmer "Larry" Kugler, 78, of Lusby, Md., died Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Born in Underwood, Minn., Larry graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1950. A Navy Mustang and retired naval aviator, he enlisted in February 1952 and retired in November 1973. During his military career, Larry was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, RVN Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal (four stars) and Navy Unit Commendation.
Larry received his Master of Science degree in management science in 1970, and was transferred to the faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. A 20-year career in Naval Intelligence followed.
Preceding Larry in death were his parents, Lawrence and Dorothy (Zurn) Kugler; grandparents August and Katie Kugler, Nicholas and Helena Zurn; and two grandsons.
Surviving Larry are sons Larry Blake and Lawrence; daughters Vay, Gay and Deborah; sisters Dorothy Spry, Evanell Janousek, Ernee McArthur, Elaine Mikkelsen and Valerie Fox; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 14 in Bowie, Md. Larry will be interred Feb. 7, 2011 at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, following a memorial service at Fort Meyer Chapel.
