Vergas loon turns 50 this year
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the design and dedication of Vergas’ iconic loon statue.
The public is invited to participate in a special celebration on Saturday, June 29, at 7 p.m. at the Vergas Event Center.
The Miss Vergas and Princess Altona Scholarship Programs will celebrate the loon’s 50th birthday by hosting a “Look Who’s Turning 50!” birthday party. It promises to be a fun-filled evening of commemoration, entertainment and memories.
There is no cost to attend the event; free will donations will be accepted.
A 1960s theme has been planned for the celebration. The Miss Vergas Queen’s Committee is asking all former title holders and Vergas supporters to help by sharing their talents. This could be in the form of songs, readings, skits, or others.
Commemorative T-shirts are for sale at the Vergas Liquor Store, The Quiet Cricket, and through Melissa Bunkowske. Everyone who purchases a T-shirt is encouraged to take part in a community picture being taken at the big loon at 4 p.m. the day of the event.
Those interested in sharing their talents should RSVP to Bunkowske at firstname.lastname@example.org by June 19.
Vergas is known as the “Home of the World’s Largest Loon!,” a large loon statue located downtown.
