Vergas teen in court for shooting DL man
A Vergas teenager appeared Monday in Becker County District Court on a felony charge of second degree assault-dangerous weapon.
Jack Thomas Nelson, 18, of 29319 415th St., Vergas, is accused of shooting a Detroit Lakes man during an altercation that took place in the early morning hours at a residence on West Lake Sallie Lake Drive in rural Detroit Lakes on Nov. 6.
During the alleged incident, Dustin Scott Matson, 22, of rural Detroit Lakes, was shot in the upper leg with a .22 handgun, according to Becker County Sheriff Kelly Shannon.
Matson was taken by private vehicle to the emergency room at Essentia St. Mary's hospital in Detroit Lakes, then transferred by ambulance to a Fargo hospital for evaluation. He was later released.
Nelson and Matson "knew each other," Shannon said.
"There was a group of individuals, an argument started," and the suspect fired several shots, one of which hit Matson in the leg, he added.
Nelson and several others reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle and he was dropped off at a residence in Frazee; the defendant was later taken into custody without incident, the initial news report stated.
Nelson is currently in custody at the Becker County Jail pending his next court appearance, at a Jan. 7 omnibus hearing. His bail has been set at $100,000 with conditions, or $250,000 without conditions.
