Former Ulen resident Vernon M. Rasmussen, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.
Vernon Monroe Rasmussen was born to Carl R. and Alice (Prestegord) Rasmussen on May 13, 1929 in Hunter, N.D. In 1936, he moved with his family to Ulen and attended District 68 country school. He later attended agriculture school in Crookston, Minn. Vern served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he returned to Ulen, where he farmed the family farm until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1999.
Vern married Virginia Doran on Nov. 14, 1970 in Ulen. They later divorced. He married Lois Berg on July 9, 1983 in Detroit Lakes. He played guitar and was a musician in a number of area bands. He entered Emmanuel Nursing Home on Oct. 10, 2008.
Vern enjoyed music, collecting John Deere items, and farming.
Surviving Vern are his wife, Lois Rasmussen of Detroit Lakes; stepchildren, Tim (Lorie) Doran of Ulen, Gordon Berg and John Berg, both of Detroit Lakes, Cheryl (Gary) Miller of Stillwater, Minn., Gerald (Sue) Doran of West Fargo, and Lonna Doran of Cottage Grove, Minn.; three step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren; as well as two sisters, Donna Sip of Ada, Minn., and Ruthie (Gene) Baker of Alexandria, Minn.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a stepson, Allen Berg.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 19 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes and at the church one hour prior to services on Friday.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 20 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen, with the Rev. Rolf Aanestad and Rev. Loren Fevig officiating. Interment will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran North Cemetery, Ulen, with military rites provided by Ulen American Legion Post 412 and VFW Post 515.
