VFW honors essay contest winners
A banquet was held Feb. 12 in the VFW Post 1676 to honor the Detroit Lakes and Holy Rosary middle school students for their participation in the VFW sponsored program, Patriot's Pen essay contest.
First, second and third prizes were awarded to the winners in grades sixth-eighth in both schools. The essay subject was "Why I am an American Patriot."
The sixth graders at Holy Rosary wrote their essay title of "What Freedom Means to Me."
Cole Remmen of Detroit Lakes Middle School received first place locally, first place in the district and second place in the state competition.
Also receiving their awards were the Voice of Democracy winners for the essay and audio contest. The subject for that was "My Role in Honoring America's Veterans." Winners were Grant Remmen and Nathan Kitzmann.
Guests at the awards banquet included parents, teachers and judges.
