Vikings shut down Frazee's rushing game to post upset
The bread and butter of the No. 3 Frazee football team was taken off the table by the No. 6 Pelican Rapids Vikings in the Section 8-2A quarterfinals Tuesday.
Rushing the ball keyed the 6-2 Hornet season, but the Vikings' limited the potent Frazee running attack to 100 total yards, while putting up 322 of their own for a 14-0 win.
The Vikings will now travel to No. 2 Hawley Saturday in the semifinals for a 2 p.m. start.
"We were physical enough at the point of attack," said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. "Statistically, this was our best game of the season. Getting a shutout in the playoffs is big and rushing the ball as well as we did was important."
The Vikings scored in the first quarter on a Brady Morgan three-yard TD run, with the drive being keyed on a converted fourth and four on the Frazee 35.
"We were kind of in no-man's land, so we went for it," Haugen said.
The insurance was purchased in the fourth quarter on an Alex Klovstad six-yard run with 5:30 left in the game.
Cris Molina converted both extra-point kicks.
Klovstad finished with 159 yards for an average of 6.6 yards per carry, while Morgan added 93 yards on the ground.
"I was really pleased with our rushing game," Haugen said. "We were able to mix it up just enough with our inside running game, where they started reacting to it.
"Then we were able to bounce it out to the perimeter for some bigger plays."
The Vikings also limited Frazee to six first downs, while neither passing attack was effective.
"(Frazee) had some open guys in their passing game, but they just misfired, so we got lucky in that regard," the Pelican Rapids coach said.
A bigger challenge now awaits Pelican Rapids in the form of a potent Hawley team, which had the night off due to Bagley forfeiting the game because of the lack of players out with the flu.
"The way we are going to challenge the kids is to just go out and compete hard," Haugen said. "We'll be the underdogs, but we just need to give ourselves a chance and have that nothing to lose mentality.
"We just can't have turnovers, that will be key. If we can keep it close, you never know what can happen."
