Volleyball: Lakers strong at net in win over Pelican Rapids
A strong game at the net by the Detroit Lakes volleyball team propelled the Lakers to their second-straight victory, with a 3-1 triumph over visiting Pelican Rapids Tuesday.
They beat Wadena-Deer Creek 3-0 last Thursday to pick up a Mid-State Conference victory, as well.
Senior Jenna Field paced the field with 16 kills, while four other Lakers had six or more kills for a well-spread-out attack.
The Lakers (3-2) also were pretty resilient against the Vikings (2-4-2), as they were able to finish off their first two wins by holding off a rallying Pelican Rapids squad.
DL took games one and two by the scores of 25-20 and 25-22, while the Vikings captured the third, 25-23.
But the Lakers finished off the Vikings with a decisive 25-17 victory in game four, with DL pulling away with five straight points to extend a 19-15 advantage to a commanding 22-15 lead.
Through the match, the Laker frontline quelled any Viking rally, led by junior middle hitter Lincoln Haiby.
During the service series by junior Sophie Wood, the Lakers took advantage of several Viking unforced errors, while winning the long series to up the lead to 22-15 in game four.
DL came close to ending the match in game three after rallying from a 10-5 deficit to snag an 11-10 margin, again coming during a Wood service series where Field put in two big kills.
But Pelican Rapids regained control to lead 18-14, with DL tying it up twice at 20-20 and 23-23.
But an out of bounds by the Lakers gave Pelican Rapids a 24-23 lead, with Haiby ending the game with a tip over the DL blockers.
DL was able to build five to six-point leads in games one and two to secure those wins, which were featured by two late Viking rallies, both staved off by the Lakers.
Serving was also a strength, as Wood had four aces and junior hitter Shay Nielsen had three. Nielsen also added three blocks, while senior setter Sierra Braukmann had 36 assists.
The Lakers will travel to Mid-State Conference opponent Park Rapids (4-4) Thursday and then play in the Hawley Tournament Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
