Volunteers out with poppies
The VFW's annual poppy drive will be back in full force this year, as volunteers give out the familiar red paper flowers at area businesses on Friday and Saturday.
The Buddy Poppy Program's Chairman Elaine Kertscher said between 15 and 20 volunteers will be out over the weekend, collecting freewill donations.
Most people give about a dollar for each flower, she said, but they appreciate any amount, even if it's a bit of spare change from a pocket.
At the state level, veterans have been crafting the flowers, which are then sold to each local post. The donations from the local sales go to keep the VFW running and to support any events they do throughout the year. -- Courtney Sinner
