Warm temps delays rink opening Warming house opens
No one can deny the unseasonably nice weather in the Detroit Lakes area. And because of those nice, above average temperatures, the ice skating rink at Peoples Park hasn't been ready for skaters -- until now.
There may not be snow yet but temperatures have dropped enough that starting Dec. 23, the warming house will be open and the public can enjoy a twirl around the ice.
On Friday, the warming house will be open from noon to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m.
During the Christmas and New Year's break from school -- Dec. 24-Jan. 2 -- the warming house will be open from noon to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m. except on Dec. 24 and 31, it'll be open noon to 4 p.m., and Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, it'll be open noon to 6 p.m.
For most of the month of January -- Jan. 3-31 -- the schedule is Monday through Friday from 3 to 5 and 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday hours will be noon to 5 and 6 to 8:30 p.m., and on Jan. 16 there is no school so the warming house will be open from noon to 5 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. as well.
February hours depend on the weather, with the average closing date of Feb. 10 for the warming house. Until that's decided, though, the hours will be the same as in January.
There is no school Feb. 20 and 21, so if the weather is still conducive to ice skating, the warming house will be open noon to 5 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. those two days as well.
The schedule is weather dependent and is subject to change. Cancellations are announced on radio stations KRCQ and KDLM.
