Waubun man sentenced for assault
A Waubun man was sentenced Monday in Becker County District Court on a felony assault charge.
Nakoya Lee VanWert, 18, of 39687 Church Lane, Waubun, was accused of stabbing and/or assaulting three unarmed men with a knife at a Becker County residence on April 13, 2008.
One of the victims received a cut to his head and another was stabbed in the neck, requiring surgery to repair the damage. VanWert was charged with one count of first degree assault causing great bodily harm and two counts of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
VanWert was convicted on the first degree assault charge and sentenced to 86 months in prison, stayed on conditions including up to 20 years of supervised probation, one year in jail and payment of $1,217 in court fines and fees. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victims in the case, and to report to jail to serve his sentence no later than April 17. The remaining assault charges were dismissed.
