Waubun rallies past Ada-Borup to stay perfect

WAUBUN - It's as if the cold mist surrounding Waubun's football team on Friday night suddenly disappeared.

Figuratively speaking, of course,

What the Bombers did in the final six minutes of their game versus Ada-Borup was unlike their style for the first 42 minutes of the game.

And that turnaround kept Waubun's perfect record (5-0) intact with a 38-35 win over the Cougars, coming back from a 12-point deficit midway through the final quarter.

Down by five points in the final few minutes, Waubun stopped Ada-Borup in a three-and-out situation to force the Cougars to punt.

Then Bombers running back Floyd DeGroat took over. Two runs - 27 and 17-yard jaunts - pushed Waubun to the Cougars' 10.

"I'm going to run my heart out if they're going to block their heart out," DeGroat said. "And they did and that's what happened."

Tyler Voss ran in the game-winner from the Cougars' 10 on the next play from scrimmage to cap the comeback.

Going for two on the conversion attempt helped pad the lead a bit as Aaron Haugo caught Dustin Spaeth's pass to put the Bombers up the three and force Ada-Borup to go for the touchdown, or at least a short field-goal attempt to tie the game.

The Cougars' ended up not getting that chance.

On Ada-Borup's first play on its ensuing drive, Spaeth intercepted Spencer Ruebke's pass to close the game out.

Spaeth and Voss teamed up to initially spark the rally after the Cougars' last touchdown.

Izaak Bray's 5-yard run cut the score at 35-30 with 4:17 left in the game, after Haugo's PAT.

With the Bombers down by two scores, coach Jason McCloskey told his team that it wasn't time to panic.

"I told them there was plenty of time on the clock," he said. "We had three timeouts."

There was some commotion about going for an onside kick, McCloskey said, which he nixed.

"One of the kids, who is a heady player, said came over and said we have to go for an onside after we score," McCloskey said. "I said 'No, we have four minutes left. We're going to play smart football and kick it to them. Going to cover and get one-two-three out, and get the ball back.'

"That's what happened and that's how you play the game."

One player had to fight off the nerves, Spaeth, which he did by keeping the offense organized and sealing the game with the interception on Ada-Borup's final drive.

"I was scared," he said. "But I knew the guys would come back and fight, and make it a game."

Before the rally, Ada-Borup looked unstoppable behind a medley of passes and rushes. The Bombers didn't seem to know what was coming next.

Ruebke took advantage of Waubun's tepidness with a 44-yard strike to 6-foot-5 end Paul Johnson near the six-minute mark of the fourth.

The Cougars got out in front and started their rally in the third quarter from a 6-yard touchdown run from Yuri Johnson, who tallied four TD's in the game. That score gave Ada-Borup a 28-23 lead late in the third.

Yuri Johnson ended up with 100 rushing yards on 13 attempts and 83 reception yards from three catches.

Before that moment, the game was a back-and-forth affair.

Spaeth gave Waubun a short-lived one-point lead with a pass to Bray. As Spaeth rolled out of the pocket, he was running for the end zone, but pulled up right before he made it to the line of scrimmage.

Bray made a one-handed grab and got one foot down for the score.

Ada-Borup held a 22-16 lead at halftime as Yuri Johnson caught a 24-yard strike with just over two minutes left.

The Cougars went up 8-0 three minutes into the game when Yuri Johnson sidestepped his way in 10-yards out from the goal line.

Waubun didn't wait long to equalize the game when DeGroat's 15-yard rush equalized the game a minute after Ada-Borup's touchdown.

The Bombers took the lead for a while when DeGroat scored from 40-yards out as Ada-Borup's defenders tried arm tackling and it didn't work on the feisty Waubun back.

Waubun visits Norman County West (2-3) on Friday.
