WE veterans hosting visit of 'The Wall' -- Traveling Vietnam memorial will be at Shooting Star Aug. 20-25
As a tribute to all veterans, the White Earth Veterans Association is hosting The Wall: A Tribute to our Veterans on Aug. 20-25.
The event will be held at the Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, but organizers Don York and Tim St. Clair stress the celebration isn't for any particular group of veterans, but rather any and all heroes.
A large focus of the celebration will be on the Wall, a traveling wall with Vietnam veterans' names listed on it. There will also be towers on display, naming those that died in the terrorist attacks of 9-11.
"This is an all heroes celebration, not just veterans," St. Clair said.
The four-day long celebration will be filled with events ranging from viewing the wall to a parade, military flyover to music.
"The event in itself is to bring the wall here," York said.
So far the two men have found "outstanding support" from those they've asked for donations to bring the wall to the area.
As it's traveling through to Mahnomen, the wall will be on display in Detroit Lakes during the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The Patriot Guard is escorting the wall from Fargo to Mahnomen.
"This is a solemn place to revisit heroes, but also to celebrate those heroes," York said.
"Our job is to honor veterans."
At the celebration, there will also be an information booth where people can come to look up veterans from any war.
There will also be three area events the same weekend, so York and St. Clair are expecting 7,000-10,000 people to pay tribute to the veterans.
Saturday will be a day filled with events, including a Ride of Honor by the Patriot Guard, military fly over, guest speakers, a powwow at the Mahnomen County Fairgrounds and music that evening.
Anyone interested in advertising and being a part of a booklet that will be distributed during the celebration can contact Don York at 218-849-2611, or Tim St. Clair at 218-204-0368.
