Weather a success for hunting opener

Nice weather on the weekend helped deer hunters for the firearms opener.

Roger Fulmer at County 6 BP said the weather made it easy for hunters to sit outside and let the deer come to them.

"It sounds like everybody had a good time," he said. His daughter got a small buck last weekend and his son-in-law will be out again next weekend to try to finish up, Fulmer said.

County 6 BP is a big game registration site and Fulmer said there were lots of people in registering their deer. He had a stack of tickets 2-3 inches thick from Sunday and Monday deer registrations.

Karina Ramsey at Holiday in Detroit Lakes, another big game registration site, said they had quite a few hunters coming in to register over the weekend. She said maybe 40 had registered deer on Monday by mid-afternoon.

Sarah Bachmann at Lakes Processing said they had a good turnout for Hunters Against Hunger, a venison donation program. They had around 25 donated deer on Monday afternoon.

"It's been promoted really well," she said. "It's nice to see hunters giving from their hearts."

Henry Hoffman at Hoffmans Meat Market said they had over 20 donation by Monday also.

"We've got quite a few," he said.

Both places are busy with the regular processing that abounds during the deer hunting season. Hoffman said they are plenty busy at Hoffmans and Bachmann said it's wild at Lakes Processing with all the deer.

Randy Freed of Hawley managed to bag a big buck--a 13 pointer--on Sunday morning, not too far from his home.

Freed had talked to other hunters and he said the reports he heard were pretty spotty, with the average or fewer number of hunters being successful.

He said he saw about the same number of hunters this year as he's seen in the past, but the same couldn't be said for the deer.

"I didn't see as many deer as I normally see," he said.
