Science adventure

Join the Detroit Lakes Library staff at 2 p.m. for a science adventure led by Detroit Lakes native John Kostrzewski, who works for United Space Alliance, a contractor for NASA. Children and adults alike will enjoy this opportunity to learn about what is happening now with the Space Program.

Merle Haggard

Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino Hotel & Events Center will live up to its name this coming month, as a star-studded lineup takes the stage in July. Live at the Lodge

The Lodge on Lake Detroit will host a free "Live at the Lodge" concert every Thursday through Aug. 27. This week's performance features the jazz duo of Dr. Alex Pershounin on bass and Nick Fryer on guitar. The concert will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. in the hotel's Fireside Lobby, and is free and open to the public as well as hotel guests. There is no cover charge for the Summer Thursdays series. CD release concert

Ben Ranson and Travis & Johnnie will perform a joint concert at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center on Friday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m., to celebrate the release of Ranson's new CD, "Eighteen Wheels of Pain." (The $5 admission charge includes a copy of the CD.) These young artists write and perform an eclectic style of original music not to be missed. Miss Northwest Pageant

Women from Northwestern Minnesota, ages 17 to 24, will vie for the title of Miss Northwest at a 7 p.m. scholarship pageant inside Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre. The winner will represent the Northwest Region in the Miss Minnesota Pageant in June of 2010 and have the opportunity to win additional scholarship money. Water Carnival

Detroit Lakes' 47th annual Northwest Water Carnival gets into full swing this weekend. Today's events include the Midsummer Bike Tour, 7-9 a.m.; Water Carnival Swim, 9 a.m.; DL Airport Fly-In & Pancake Breakfast, 9-11 a.m.; Jaycees Geocache Event, 9 a.m.; Kids' Midsummer Bike Tour, 10 a.m.; and the Demolition Derby, 6 p.m. With the exception of the fly-in breakfast at the airport, and the demolition derby at the Becker County Fairgrounds, all of the day's events begin and end at the DL Pavilion. Cowboy Church

The Harvest Barn Cowboy Church hosts Ron and Opal Erickson from Branson, Mo., in concert at 7 p.m. Ron and Opal received the 2007 and 2008 Duo of the year award from the CGMA (Country Gospel Music Association) voted on by their peers.
