The 141st annual White Earth Reservation Celebration and Powwow concludes today (Sunday) at the powwow grounds in White Earth. Today's highlights include a men's chicken dance at 4 p.m., and the Grand Entry at 1 and 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the White Earth Reservation Tribal Council and the Shooting Star Casino Hotel & Event Center. The Ministry of Jazz performs tonight at 8 p.m. in the ITOW Veterans' Museum, 805 West Main, Perham. This "Tribute to the Big Band Era" will feature the area's greatest jazz musicians. The group includes Harley Sommerfeld on saxophone; Ed Christianson on trombone; John Pederson on trumpet; Kent Karch on upright bass; Kathy Brekke, vocals and keyboards; and Joe Riewer on drums. Members of the band perform regularly at Jazz Night at Basie's in Fargo.  In the summer they can be heard at Jasper's Jubilee Theatre in Park Rapids. The concert on June 14 will be held at the ITOW Veterans Museum, 805 West Main, Perham. A Detroit Lakes summer tradition for the past several years, the Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series continues June 16 with a 7 p.m. performance by Vincent & the Van Goes. Other upcoming performers will include Doc & the Scrubs, June 23; Mark Fogelson, June 30; Doc & the Scrubs, July 7; Tim Eggebraaten, July 21; Crashing Down, July 28; Purple Pan Steel Drum Band, Aug. 4; Ulen Community Band, Aug. 11; Doc & the Scrubs, Aug. 18; and the Lakes Area Community Concert Band, Aug. 25. The community of Perham will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Turtle Fest on June 17-21, with a number of features new and old including a parade, at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 19, followed by live music from October Road at the fairgrounds, and fireworks at 10:30 p.m. during the dance. The second annual "Back to the 60s Bash" featuring the music of the Unbelievable Uglies takes place on Saturday, June 20, in the historic Grand View Heights Ballroom; and the Little Miss Turtle Fest pageant, open to girls ages 5-7, will be held Thursday, June 18 at 7 p.m. in the Perham High School Auditorium. There will also be a hog and turkey cookout; a show by the Perham Area Cruisers Car Club; and of course, the annual demolition derby, set for 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20 at the fairgrounds.

Banjo player Johnny Butten and his band will perform at the Ulen-Hitterdal School's Top Hat Theatre in Ulen on Saturday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. Butten is the current world record holder as the "world's fastest banjo player," according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The concert will raise funds to offset costs for the 2009-10 season of the Top Hat Theatre. Tickets are now available at Northwestern Bank, Ulen and in the Ulen-Hitterdal School office at $10 for adults and $5 for students. Singer-songwriter Tim Mahoney will perform with his band at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes (402 West Lake Drive) on Friday, June 26, at 9 p.m. Mahoney was just announced as the Grand Prize winner of the 2008 Great Lakes Songwriting Contest, and earlier this year won the pop arm of the Durango Song Expo's "Write With a Hit-Maker" Contest as well as the 2008 We Are Listening Contest. Moorhead's Hjemkomst Center is gearing up to celebrate the 32nd Annual Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival, June 26-29. The festival, which hosts roughly 6,500 visitors each year, will highlight Finnish culture. Plans are taking shape for New York Mills' 125th anniversary celebration, "Blast From the Past," set for the holiday weekend of July 3-5. There will be a Lund Boats Fishing Tournament, parade and street dance, all on Friday, July 3; pancake breakfast, a classic car show, ball game and fireworks on Saturday, July 4; and a community picnic, judging of the beard growing contest, coed softball, and both bagpipe and barbershop music performances, all set for Sunday, July 5. There will also be tours of the Lund Boats plant, a historic photograph display at the Cultural Center, free swimming and more.
