Your library offers free classes to help you get the most out of these free databases.

On Thursday, Feb. 24 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Detroit Lakes Library will offer a class on LARL's OAISter (ELM)/Online History Databases.

Then on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., join us for a Beginning Genealogy Class. Class sizes are limited so please pre-register by calling the library.

In the meantime, here are a few of the resources available at the library to get you started:

Who Do You Think You Are?: The Essential Guide to Tracing Your Family History by Megan Smolenyak. There is no such thing as an ordinary family.

Each one has its own stories: the black sheep, the Civil War hero, the ancestors who fled to the United States, or the lost family fortune. No matter how plain you think your background is, chances are there is a saga just waiting to be discovered.

Faces of America (DVD) directed by John Maggio. Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. turns again to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 11 renowned Americans.

Looking to the wider immigrant experience, Professor Gates unravels the American tapestry, following the threads of his guests' lives back to their origins around the globe.

Along the way, the many stories he uncovers of displacement and homecoming, of material success and dispossession, of assimilation and discrimination illuminate the American experience.
