William F. "Bill" Scheler, 90, of Callaway, died Friday, February 6, 2009 in Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.
William Francis Scheler was born to Anton and Mary (Falk) Scheler on June 18, 1918 at Jamestown, N.D. He was a 1937 graduate of Jamestown High School. During his school years, he also delivered newspapers for the Jamestown Sun, set pins at Majestic Bowling Alley and worked for a golf course. After graduation, he was a checker at Economy Grocery in Jamestown prior to moving to Minnesota.
In 1939, Bill purchased a small farm in the Strawberry Lake area of rural Ogema. While there, he also did some carpenter work and worked for several summers for the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Bill married Arzetta Coles on Nov. 27, 1939 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in White Earth. In 1950, he began working for American Crystal Sugar Company during the fall and winter months. He retired in 1983. The couple moved into Callaway in 1987. Both Bill and Arzetta were active volunteers at St. Mary's Regional Health Center (now St. Mary's Innovis Health) for many years. Arzetta died in 2005.
Bill enjoyed his grandchildren, farming, gardening, canning, golfing, having coffee and lunch with his neighbors, keeping track of and documenting the weather each day and taking train and bus tours touching each of the 48 contiguous states.
Surviving Bill are his children, Lucretia (Ralph) Adair of Charleston, S.C., Dennis (Rogene) Scheler of Callaway, Nancy (Steven) Nelson of Oak Grove, Minn., and Edwin (Linda) Scheler of Waubun; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sisters, Isabelle Davis and Mary Scheler, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; and brother, James Scheler of Sacramento, Calif.
In addition to Arzetta, his wife of 65 years, Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louis and Joe; sisters, Lidwina, Amelia and Ruby; grandson, Monty; and great-grandson, Adam.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 at David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes; there will be a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the start of services Saturday at the church.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 in Assumption Catholic Church, Callaway.
