William Spotts

Lake Melissa summer resident William L. Spotts, 82, of Bismarck, N.D., died Friday, August 7, 2009, at his home, with his loving family by his side.

William L. Spotts was born to William P. and Florence (Anderson) Spotts on Feb. 28, 1927, in Crookston, Minn. He grew up and was educated in Jamestown, N.D. While in school, Bill enjoyed participating in sports, especially football.

William enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1944 and was honorably discharged as an RM 2/C in May 1946. During his college days, Bill fell in love and married his sweetheart, Ollie June Lindberg, on Aug. 21, 1949. Their son, Steve, was born in Jamestown in 1951.

Bill worked as an insurance adjuster for General Adjustment Bureau and was promoted to the main office in Fargo. In 1954, daughter Deborah Ann was born. In 1956, he was promoted as manager of General Adjustment Bureau at the Dickinson, N.D., office.

In early 1960, Bill started his own adjustment company, known as Spot Adjustment Company. He sold his company in 1970 and they moved to Bismarck, where he started a new career with Piper, Jaffrey, and Hopwood as a stockbroker. He retired in 1987 as a vice president.

Bill became very involved in civic and fraternal organizations. He became exalted ruler of the Dickinson Elks 1137. He was a volunteer fireman, deputy sheriff, municipal judge, president of the Dickinson Golf Association, charter and life member of the El Zagel Shrine, and board member of Apple Creek Country Club in Bismarck.

Bill and Ollie spent their summers at Lake Melissa in Minnesota, where he enjoyed his retirement playing cards, fishing, and golfing. Bill had four holes in one, with the last one witnessed by his grandson, BJ Spotts. Bill was also an avid hunter.

Surviving Bill are his beloved wife of 60 years, Ollie; his son, Dr. Steven (Joy) Spotts of Bismarck; his daughter, Deborah Ann Bjornson of Valley City, N.D.; three grandsons and two granddaughters; three great granddaughters; and stepsister Jean (George) Stenjhem of Minneapolis.

Preceding Bill in death were his parents, William and Florence; stepmother, Evelyn Spotts; and stepbrother, Chris Sylvester.

A memorial service is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (south campus) in Bismarck, with the Rev. Craig Schweitzer officiating.
