The winning streak for the Detroit Lakes baseball team finally succumbed to the odds, as the Lakers lost their first game of 2008 in a split with Pequot Lakes Tuesday.

But senior pitcher Chris Gilson's unbeaten streak remained intact after he tossed his third complete-game shutout of the season, with the 4-0 victory in game one in Pequot Lakes.

But the Patriots used a six-run second inning in game two and shut down DL with six scattered hits to hand the Lakers (10-1) their first loss of the season by the score of 8-4.

"Offensively, we haven't been taking good swings," said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. "We haven't had many strikeouts, but instead some weak grounders and such. We also haven't been able to string a lot of hits together."

Starter Doug Dickey looked to be cruising through the second inning, forcing a couple of fly balls to start out. But the Patriots' bats came alive and Dickey walked two and hit one batter, as the home team put six on the board.

"Doug just couldn't get the second out and we booted a couple of balls," Fuhs said of the big inning.

Senior Jon Tolbert relieved Dickey in the second, pitching well for 2.1 innings, giving up two runs and two hits.

Pequot Lakes added two more runs in the fourth, which included two doubles, to build an 8-1 lead.

The Lakers put together three runs in the sixth, with hot-hitting Aaron Gnoisky and Reed Oistad each recording RBI singles.

"Both Aaron and Reed have been hitting well," Fuhs said.

Dillon Cole led DL's hitting attack by going 2-2 with one run scored.

Oistad and Gnoisky anchored the Lakers' offense in game one, with Oistad going 3-4 with an RBI and run and Gnoisky going 2-3 with an RBI.

Oistad led the game off with a double and scored quickly on the next at-bat, a single by Nick Polejewski.

Max Knoll put DL up 2-0 after being hit by a pitch in the second and was hit in by Gnoisky, who laced a double.

The Lakers doubled the score in the fourth with two runs, with Oistad gaining an RBI single to score Knoll and Max Bentley taking home after singling and being walked in on a balk.

That was more than enough for Gilson, who allowed just one runner to get past second base and threw a three-hitter in seven innings.

Gilson's ERA is sub 1.30, with five complete games pitched. His offspeed and accuracy has been the strength to his games, along with quick innings, usually throwing under 80 pitches per game.

"He's throwing strikes and the defense behind him is making the plays," Fuhs said. "He doesn't hurt himself with walks and bad pitches.

"Chris has been a very good pitcher for us."

The Lakers -- who are 7-1 in the conference -- will play at Staples-Motley in a doubleheader Tuesday, for either a share of the Mid-State Conference title or, with a sweep, an outright win.
