The National Weather Service this morning issued a winter storm warning from 3 p.m. today to 6 a.m. Thursday for an area stretching roughly from Devils Lake, N.D., to Fergus Falls, including Detroit Lakes and Becker County.

Snow will spread into the southern Red River Valley and west-central Minnesota by mid- to late afternoon today and become heavy at times this evening, the weather service said. The snow will end late tonight with total accumulations of 5 to 7 inches.

The heaviest snow appears likely along a line from Fargo to Fergus Falls, the weather service said.

North winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph tonight, causing areas of reduced visibility and dangerous wind chills of 25 to 35 below zero.

The snow will be fluffy, much like the 1.2 inches of snow that fell in the area on Monday. North winds in the 25- to 30-mph range could blow the snow around, but conditions won't be as bad as last Saturday's blizzard, Godon said.

"With this one, we're not looking at winds quite as strong," he said. "There will be some blowing and drifting snow, but nothing like the blizzard we just had."

Wind chills will fall to 25 to 35 below zero by Thursday morning.
