Winter storm warning until 3 p.m. today for Becker County

The National Weather Service's Grand Forks office said in an urgent message Monday evening that the winter storm that barreled into the region tonight will likely pack more of a punch than originally forecasted.

The heaviest band of snow is shifting farther north than previously thought. Six to 7 inches of snow are planned along a line from Fargo to Detroit Lakes and from Fergus Falls to Wadena.

There will be a sharp cutoff of snow north and south of those areas, with 3 to 5 inches of snow expected to fall in Mahnomen and Park Rapids.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 3 p.m. today (Tuesday) in Becker County. Wind gusts will be hover between 20 and 25 miles per hour, causing drifting snow in some areas.

The NWS alert states that during the warning, travel is only advised in an emergency, and if travel is necessary, carry a flashlight, food and water.
