Wixo makes state in triple jump
Practice doesn't make perfect, as Lake Park-Audubon senior Jesse Wixo has proven.
The multi-talented Raider athlete qualified for the Class 1A state track and field meet in the triple jump, despite not making one practice throughout the spring season.
No, it's not that Wixo purposely neglected track practice, instead he was a two-sport athlete just during the spring season.
Wixo was LP-A's starting catcher on the baseball team, while being out for the track and field squad, as well.
Saturday in Crookston, Wixo triple jumped for a mark of 40-3 to finish second in the event and his first state track berth.
"I didn't get to practice much (in the triple jump) and competed in about six or seven meets," Wixo said.
But Wixo made the most of his triple jump events, breaking the LP-A record earlier in the season in Hawley, while staying consistent up to the section meet.
Wixo was also on the 2008 football team, which made it to the Class 1A state semifinal game, but this will be his first trip as an individual.
"I'm just going to go down and have fun with it and just get as mentally focused as I can," Wixo added.
Wixo will start triple jumping Friday at 3 p.m. at Hamline University in the Twin Cities.
Wixo also finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 19-10.
LP-A's Jon Nelson took fifth in the high jump with a height of 5-11, while Chase Zeller was ninth in the discus with a 117-03.
Rachel Carlson had a ninth-place finish in the 200 dash for the LP-A girls with a time of 28.43.
Section 8-1A meet in Crookston, Saturday, May 5.
