Wixo scores win No. 100 for Badgers

Despite having to have to forfeit four matches due to match counts leading up to the Section 8-2A tournaments (team and individual), the United Clay Becker wrestling team just barely lost to Mahnomen/Waubun, 39-34 Thursday.

"The guys that did wrestle, I thought wrestled well and we gave ourselves a chance to win in the end," said UCB head coach Brenton Newling. "I thought it was a good learning experience for the guys to see that when you give up that many points (by forfeits), you can still make it a competitive dual."

The Badgers finished fifth in the Northwest Tournament in Fertile-Beltrami Saturday, as senior Logan Gage claimed the 132-pound championship.

Sophomore Mason Swegarden was the 126-pound runner-up, while senior Wyatt Wixo won his 100th career match by taking second at 145.

Senior Mat Pepper was second at 195.

"I thought we came out and wrestled a little flat," Newling said. "On the positive side, this is a good time of the year to get the jitters out before the sections."

The Badgers will be heading to Fergus Falls for the section meet for individual wrestlers, Feb. 24-25, while the duals will be held in Thief River Falls, Feb. 17-18.
