A woman is dead after the sport utility vehicle she was driving rolled down a hill and into the ice-crusted water of the St. Louis Bay at the end of North 21st Street in Superior's Billings Park.

The Superior Police Department responded to a call about the one-car accident about 10 a.m. Sunday. The accident happened earlier, according to a news release from the police.

The woman was found seat-belted into the driver's seat of the dark green 2002 Ford Excursion with North Dakota license plates. The SUV was mostly submerged in the water. High speeds are believed to have been a factor in the accident, according to police. Three trees on the edge of the water were uprooted.

Rescue workers searched the water and pulled debris from the SUV in the early afternoon before towing the vehicle. The parking lot area at the end of North 21st Street was closed off during the investigation.

The victim's name is being held until family is notified.
