The chili has been eaten, the parade has ended and once again, the Northwest Water Carnival has entertained those of Detroit Lakes and the surrounding area for another year.

After a week of events for adults and children alike, Sunday wrapped up the annual celebration with the parade and water show.

This year's admiral, Andrew Gag, said it was a success, rain or shine.

"I truly enjoyed the opportunity to serve as the 72nd Admiral. It was great to see all of the people in town even with some of the rain. As everyone told me, don't worry about the rain, it is the water carnival after all," he said.

Winners in the Chili and Salsa Cook-Off were: First place to Norma Borgeson and Reid Hekman for "Chile Blanco Con Pollo," second place and Zorbaz's Rick's Pick went to the TJ and April Foltz family for "Tailgating Chili," Best Booth went to "wenches chili" of past Jaycees women Peg Harstad, Dana Gulson, Patti Boller and Linda Isaacs, and People's Choice went to the Lakes Area Parrot Heads with "Captain Morgan Chocolate Chipolte Chili."

The Best Salsa award went to Clyde Tucker and Corey Bakken for "C&C Salsa."

New this year was the "Gastro Blaster" traveling trophy for the hottest chili, which went to Kelly Brackett for "Brackett's Brew."

"It was very successful," organizer Johnna Thorson said. "We ran out of 11 kinds (of chili) in about 45 minutes."

Winners in the Parade of the Northwest were Laker Drum Line and First Lutheran's Avalanche Ranch float. Organizer Chris Bentler said there are several judges during the parade that are asked to pick one band and one float they think are "deserving for one reason or another" of the awards.

Top finishers of the 5K Fun Run for 46 and older were Lonnie Olson for the men and Judy Korzenowski for the women. In the 36-45 age category, Cory Kacer took honors for the men and Sherry Senger in the women's category.

For ages 26-35, Mick Bakker and Dawn Eckert took first, and for ages 19-25 were Rory and Ryan Manke and Laura Herbranson took first. Nakisomi Mcbealilion and Jaynie Herbranson took first in the 13-18 age category. For 12 and under, first place winner was Brandon Quibell.

"The success of the water carnival comes from both the dedicated effort of all of the Jaycees and the local business who have supported the event," Gag said.

Cara Frank has been named as next year's Water Carnival admiral.

"I'm very honored to be chosen as the 73rd admiral. It's a high honor in the Jaycees," she said. "I'm anxious to start planning for next year."

Already planned are the dates of next year's festivities, which are July 12-20.
