Woods N Wheels Club to offer youth ATV safety training
Woods-n-Wheels ATV Club is offering youth ATV safety training Saturday, Sept. 15, in Detroit Lakes.
Registration will be Sept. 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the basement of the Detroit Lakes VFW. For those who can't make it on registration night, call 847-4868.
The classroom session will be at 8 a.m. in the VFW basement. The driving skills session will start about 15 minutes after the competition of the classroom session. It will be held behind the Oak Hills Addition, west of highway junction 34 and 59.
A rider can take the course at age 11, but the certification does not take affect until the turn 12.
Two examples of why youth safety training is important come from Minnesota accidents reported this year. A 10-year-old slammed into the side of a pickup while coming out of the ditch onto the road and was driving an 800 cc side by side. And an International Falls 6-year-old girl was killed when the ATV rolled over and landed on top of her. The other two riders were not hurt.
Students at the youth safety training will learn where they can and can't ride and safe handling of an ATV. Every person under the age of 16 must have taken the course in order to ride on public lands. Cost is $20, payable to Woods N Wheels ATV Club.
Before the ATV classroom, youth must fill out forms through the Department of Natural Resources. They can be downloaded at www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/vehicle/atv/index.html Download the parent's sign off sheet, obtain signatures and bring it to class.
Bring the following items to the driving skills session: your ATV if it fits you, DOT approved helmet, long pants and long-sleeved shirt, boots (no tennis shoes), gloves and goggles if helmet doesn't have shield.
To register, call 847-4868.
