Wrestling: Lakers take 2 in C-I
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

After a long, drawn out preseason, the Detroit Lakes wrestling team finally had their opportunity to jump on the mat for real, and the Lakers took full advantage of their pent up energy with a pair of wins in the Crosby-Ironton triangular Tuesday.

Both wins were over Mid-State Conference opponents, as the Lakers downed Crosby-Ironton 65-3 and went down to the wire with Staples-Motley, before winning 34-27.

“It was great to get things going last night,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. “It was time for us to finally get on the mats and compete after a long preseason.

“I thought we put out a great effort last night.  Our middle of the lineup proved to be our strength.  We ended up double forfeiting a few weights where our opponents didn’t have a wrestler so that we could save on match counts for our wrestlers.”

The middle of the lineup picked up valuable bonus points, with weights 145 through 170 all sticking their Ranger opponents.

Starting off the pin streak was Nathan Francis, as he was proceeded by Bryant Swiers, Jarett Nosal and Luke Eggebraaten.

Cole Hegg also captured a fall at 195.

The Cardinals posed a tough challenge in the second dual. S-M pulled to within seven points with a pair of pins at 182 and 195 by Nathan Johnson and Drew Peterson, but double forfeits at 220 and heavyweight secured the win for the Lakers.

Pins were registered by DL’s Payton Jackson (120), Francis (145) and Parker Jackson (152).

The Lakers will compete in the Grand Forks Invitational Friday and Saturday.
