Wrestling Preview: Lakers to lead a balanced lineup

After going through some growing pains last season, the Detroit Lakes wrestling team will be reaping some of those benefits of their younger wrestlers seeing action during the 2012-13 year.

That, coupled with a strong offseason by many of their wrestlers, means the Lakers look to be a well-balanced squad throughout their lineup, with a strong middle and a bookend heavyweight.

“We hope to be in the hope again in the section,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. “If we can develop and improve during the regular season, we should be in the top four again.”

The Lakers return two state wrestlers from last year, with state placer junior Parker Jackson back in the 152-60 weight range and sophomore heavyweight James Huwe capping DL’s matches.

“James had a great offseason and earned All-American honors (in Greco-Roman) this past summer,” Ullyott said. “Parker also had a strong offseason wrestling, so both are ready to go.”

But throughout the Laker lineup, DL will have solid, seasoned wrestlers, who will be looking to limit bonus points taken on them, instead picking them up.

Starting out at 106-113, both eighth grader Braydon Ortlof and junior Tyler Bellefeuille have experience.

At 113-20, eighth grader Payton Jackson returns with good mat experience, while freshman Cory Puttbrese will be in the mix, as well.

The 120-26 weight divisions will be occupied by eighth grader Austin Baker and freshman Trey Greer, with both making varsity debuts, while freshman Marcus Jaskens has some mat seasoning in those weights as well.

Freshman Sean Lundeen is a transfer from Jackson, where he wrestled some varsity at 120-26.

In the 132-38 classes, juniors Luke Payne and Logan Twigg have several years of varsity action under their belts, with eighth grader Cameron Erb looking for time, as well.

Sophomore Dylan Skoda will be a contributor at 138-45, while weights 145-52 are loaded with experience with juniors Nathan Francis, Bryant Swiers and Luke Eggebraaten solidifying those slots.

“Luke is back from an injury which kept him out last year, and we are expecting him to be a contributor,” Ullyott said.

A varsity newcomer, freshman Jordan Mackner will join Jackson at the 152-60 weight divisions, while the 160-70 classes will have lots of competition between senior Jarett Nosal (captain), sophomores Rayne Jacobson and Manuel Plaza.

“Jarett has been wrestling varsity since his freshman season and he has tremendous athletic ability,” Ullyott said. “He’s ready to take the next step.”

In weight classes 170-82, senior Cole Hegg is back after being a regular on the varsity mat the last couple of seasons, with junior Tanner Schnathorst and eighth grader Jacob Hanson looking to gain some experience.

The Lakers are well seasoned from 182 through 195 with senior Alex Weber, Mike Renteria and Kirby Siewert making the team a formidable one, right in front of Huwe.

“Alex had an injury last season and Kirby also missed the entire season with an injury,” Ullyott said.

“Kirby should be a tough 220, because he has good size and strength.”

The Lakers will miss a couple of important cogs from last year, with Jeff Gailfus moving out of town, while senior Brandon Dahring is out for the year with an ACL injury.

“Those are two big holes to fill,” Ullyott said. “Brandon will still provide his leadership by being a student/coach for us this year, though.”

The Lakers have only two home matches this season, due to some cancellations and not hosting a DL tournament.

They will be at home Dec. 17 for a dual with Mahnomen/Waubun, while hosting a triangular with Fergus Falls and Ottertail Central Jan. 21.

The season opener will be Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Crosby-Ironton, for a triangular with the Rangers and Staples-Motley.
