Xcel Energy contacting customers about errors on electric bills
MINNEAPOLIS - Xcel Energy is notifying about 16,000 customers in Minnesota and South Dakota that some information about their accounts inadvertently was printed on another customer’s bill.
The company is also changing the affected residential customers’ account numbers and offering business customers the option of creating new account numbers.
The information, which appears on some bills dated Nov. 12, includes another customer’s name, address, account and meter number, energy used and the amount owed. It does not include any billing or payment history or sensitive personal or financial information, such as Social Security numbers or bank account information.
“We sincerely apologize to all customers affected by this error,” said Dave Sparby, president and CEO of Northern States Power Co.-Minnesota, an Xcel Energy company. “Protecting customers’ information is of utmost importance to us.”
Xcel Energy said it confirmed that the error was made by its bill printing vendor, that no external party had accessed company records to cause the error and that the error was limited to about 16,000 of the company’s 1.4 million customers in the two states.
