Young DL team making strides
With a little inconsistency still lingering, the Detroit Lakes girls' golf team is still finding top team finishes in the early part of the season.
The Lakers finished second by only one stroke Friday in Perham, as the host Yellowjackets nipped DL 393 to 394.
Courtney Hedstrom shot a fifth-place score of 94, while Perham's Holly Karkela won medalist laurels with an 85.
"It's just been some course management problems with the girls, so far, but it's still early," said DL head coach Jen Hendrickson. "They are still posting a few big numbers on some holes, so if they can get rid of those, their scores will drop."
The Lakers had only one other player shoot under a 100, with Matty Tschider stroking a 96, while Trisa Hutchinson finished with a 101 and Natalie Roth a 103 to round out DL's top four scores.
Sydney Busker carded a 108 and Ashley Friesen a 111.
Scores improved dramatically Monday at the TPC Invite in Blaine, as the Lakers shaved off 21 strokes from their team score for a 10th place finish (out of 20 teams) with a 373.
This time, three players broke 90, as Tschider led the way with an 88, while each of Hutchinson and Hedstrom had 89's.
Roth finished with a 107, while Emma Thompson had a 125 and Friesen a 112.
"Even after shooting under 90, those three still had a hole or two of an eight or nine, so there's still some cleaning up to do," Hendrickson said.
The Lakers will continue that process Saturday at the Legacy in the Staples-Motley Invite, starting at 9 a.m.
