'Voices from Ellis Island' coming to Wadena in October
Wadena County Historical Society Receives Grant to Present "Voices From Ellis Island"
The Five Wings Arts Council has awarded a grant to the Wadena County Historical Society to present Pippa White's one-woman play about Ellis Island on October 6, 2017 at the Robertson Theatre in Wadena.
"Voices from Ellis Island" tells the true stories of American immigrants in the early part of the 20th century. From 1890 to 1930, Ellis Island was the first experience of life in America for millions of immigrants. Their stories are amusing, frightening, inspiring, and above all, true.
This year, the Wadena County Historical Society has offered a number of free programs that celebrate the people and cultures of Wadena County. "Voices from Ellis Island," tells the stories of some of the immigrants that flocked to Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century seeking relief from famine and oppression but most of all freedom: to work, to worship, to succeed.
Pippa White has had more than twenty years as a solo performer and has been a teaching artist since 1990. She calls her One's Company Productions part theatre, part storytelling, part history. Audiences call them unique, captivating, and touching. She has crisscrossed the country many times, touring to over 30 states, performing at universities and colleges, conferences, performing arts centers, museums, libraries, and festivals. Her performances are entertainment wrapped in history, intertwined with inspiration.
This performance is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
