Historical steamer cruise

"You can't move forward until you can look back," says Becker County Historical Society Museum Curator Carrie Johnston.

To know why things exist, why they're shaped the way they are today and where they came from is important, she adds.

The Becker and Otter Tail County areas are full of rich historical facts that are of interest to residents and tourists of the area.

Today (Sunday), the museum will take about 50 people on a history cruise at Fair Hills Resort on Pelican Lake from 3 to 5 p.m., where they will learn about the area's boating and fishing history.

Pelican River was one of only two places in Minnesota where steamboats were operated, Johnston said. The other was the Red River in Fargo-Moorhead.

"Steamboats were more popular than the roads because the roads were so poor," she added.

The museum has never hosted a history cruise before and members decided it would be a unique fundraiser for the organization.

"There is an awful lot of information here on boating and this type of entertainment for the area," said museum staff member Margie Rousu. "And I think it would be nice to have some sort of fundraising that's different."

The afternoon cruise will aboard the 60-foot "Big Pelican" excursion boat. Snacks and a cash bar will be available.

There is still room on the cruise for those who would like to attend. Tickets are $15.
