Books to help navigate changes

The 2009 edition of What Color is Your Parachute? is a favorite of job hunters and career changers.

Life changes. Sometimes in the "blink of an eye," other times with a bit more notice!

Whether the event is planned, like the birth of a new child, surgery or retirement, or an unplanned event like a flood, car accident or heart attack, the Detroit Lakes Library can get you the information you need.

The Detroit Lakes Library experienced change recently. A parking lot car accident totaled staff and customer cars-luckily no one was hurt! The following books deal with some common life changing events:

- Floods, Flash Floods, and Mudslides: A Practical Survival Guide, by G. S. Prentzas. This book covers the basics of what a flood is, where they happen, flood preparedness, flood warnings and survival, and after the flood.

- The Joy of Retirement, by David C. Borchard. Life after work no longer conjures up images of couples wandering the malls, playing golf, and taking endless Caribbean cruises. As baby boomers reach their 50s and 60s, they are redefining what it means to retire. Many of them are still choosing to work or create a whole new life entirely. What they crave is vitality, joy, and meaning in their lives. Author David Borchard has been helping adults rejuvenate their careers and lives for 30 years.

- Safeguard Your Identity: Protect Yourself with a Personal Private Audit, by Mari J. Frank. This book will show you how to greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft. Although no one can promise that you won't be victimized, because your personal information is readily available on myriad databases, the information in this book gives you the expertise to evaluate your own privacy risks and identity theft exposure so you will determine the changes you need to make in your daily life. The user friendly guide with bullet point easy to follow steps will serve as your "personal privacy audit" to establish your strategy to shield you from the epidemic of identity theft.

- The 2009 What Color is Your Parachute?: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career Changers by Richard Nelson Bolles. What Color is Your Parachute? is still the best-selling job-hunting book in the world. A favorite of job hunters and career changers for more than three decades, it continues to be a mainstay on best-seller lists.
