Let the library help you decide on baby names

Did you know that the most popular day for babies to make their entrance is now Wednesday? This is the first year since at least 1990 that Tuesday wasn't the biggest birth day. (Center for Disease Control)

"Sunday is the slowest day, with 35.1 fewer births than average." The months that boast the most newborns arriving are the hot months of July, August and September.

We have all heard of the baby boom that occurred after World War II, but did you know that in 2007 about 4,315,000 children were born, about 15,000 more than the peak time of the baby boom in 1957? (National Center for Health Statistics)

This doesn't mean we're in the middle of another baby boom. Keep in mind, our population has expanded since the years following WWII. This means every year in the United States over 4 million babies need a name. The following books are a sampling of what is available at your library to help you find that perfect given name.

- The Very Best Baby Name Book, by Bruce Lansky. This book includes 60,000-plus names and 300-plus helpful lists of names to consider. It also includes new features such as: name games (that can be played at home or at parties), how to throw a baby-name-themed shower, the latest outrageous names selected by celebrities for their babies, new fascinating facts about names, and answers to frequently asked baby naming questions.

- The Ultimate Baby Names Book, by Diane Stafford. Packed full of more than 54,000 names and 100 lists, this book helps parents choose the perfect name for their baby. For a world where names like ESPN and Lexus have replaced Dick and Jane, The Ultimate Baby Names Book is packed with the most current and contemporary names, plus all those traditional and classic names (and the classics that are back in style!).

This book features tens of thousands of root names, plus variations, common meanings and origins. It also includes fun lists to get the excited, expectant parents talking and laughing, such as: High-Energy Names, Girlie Girls and Macho Men, Globetrotters, Future Olympians, Out-of-Date and Overused Names.

- The Everything Baby Names Book, by June Rifkin. This book is your singular resource for naming your little bundle of joy! Loaded with the 25,000 best options for boys and girls, you can easily narrow down your favorites from A to Z.

Inside you'll find dictionaries of names for boys and girls, sidebars packed with fun facts about names, top ten lists of names across dozens of categories and worksheets in the appendix for tracking your favorites.

While other books promise tens of thousands of tried and true names, The Everything Baby Names Book, Second Edition, is packed with the ones you're more likely to really name your newborn. So complete, you may have trouble choosing just one!
