Learn another language, with library's help

People desire to learn a second language for many reasons. Going on a vacation to a foreign country is probably the most popular reason for a crash course. Some choose to learn the language of their ancestors. Some parents are incorporating a second language into their child's early life to open up possibilities for them later. No matter your reason, Detroit Lakes Library can help you acquire the tools necessary to achieve your language goals. The following highlighted books focus on children, but our collection includes instruction for adult learners as well. Our collection includes audiobooks for learning a new language, too!

• 7 Steps to Raising a Bilingual Child, by Naomi Steiner, M.D., with Susan L. Hayes. The best time to learn a second language is as a child. During childhood, the brain is more receptive to language learning than at any other time in life. Aware that a second language can enrich their child's understanding of other cultures and bring future job opportunities in a world drawn ever closer by globalization, many parents today are motivated to raise their children bilingual.

This book helps parents in both monolingual and multilingual families determine and achieve their bilingual goals for their child, whether those goals are to understand others, the ability to speak a second language, reading and/or writing in two languages, or some combination of all of these. The authors explain how the brain learns more than one language, explode common myths, address frequently asked questions, and reveal an array of resources available to families. Packed with insightful anecdotes and powerful strategies, this is a one-of-a-kind guidebook for those seeking to provide their children with a uniquely valuable experience.

• Berlitz Kids German Picture Dictionary, by Berlitz International. Packed with essential words for younger language learners such as colors, family members, numbers and animals, this dictionary has a conversation section containing phrases essential for beginners as well as topical pages introducing subjects to younger children.

• Berlitz Kids Italian Picture Dictionary, by Berlitz International.
