'The Kayak Lady' coming to DL

'The Kayak Lady,' also known as Mary Shideler, will be at the Detroit Lakes Public Library on Wednesday, Oct. 31 for a program about her experiences. Submitted Photo

Are you ready for an adventure? In addition to her adventures in China and Africa, Shideler kayaked over 1,000 lakes in Itasca County and its environs.

She chronicles the adventure in her book, "The Kayak Lady," which is available at your library along with other books on the topic.

Mary Shideler's presentation will be Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Library.

"The Kayak Lady: One Woman, One Kayak and 1007 Lakes."

Mary Shideler had a quest to paddle all 1,007 lakes in northern Minnesota's Itasca County. Along the way, she learned to trust her capacity to overcome obstacles.

"The Kayak Lady" is a collection of stories and photos -- a mix of adventure and fun -- which documents Mary's experiences over 15 years..

""Kayaking Made Easy: A Manual for Beginners with Tips for the Experienced," by Dennis Stuhaug.

A generously illustrated handbook for beginners and seasoned paddlers, "Kayaking Made Easy" is brimming with advice, humor, and personal anecdotes about every aspect of flatwater and sea kayaking.

Dennis Stuhaug, an encouraging and enthusiastic instructor, takes a step-by-step approach to introducing kayaking gear, strokes, maneuvers, and the complexities of long-distance navigation.
