Laddies Loppet returns

Laddies Loppet, a mountain bike stage race held annually at Maplelag Resort near Callaway, is going on its eighth year as part of the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series this Labor Day weekend.

The race, which will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, was named Race of the Year in the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series in both 2011 and 2012.

The race is named after a former pet dog of the Richards family, owners of the resort since 1973.

Saturday’s racing includes a time trial and short track race, while Sunday’s racing features the main event of cross-country racing.

There will be open classes for both male and female riders with races and age categories for every type of rider, making this a great, family friendly event.

General classification will be scored on a timed system. The rider with the lowest accumulative time will take the overall win.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five overall male and female elite racers. The Sunday cross-country race is the race that counts in the point standings for the series and prizes. First place wins $300, second $200, third receives $150, fourth $100, and fifth earns $85.

Males and females who break the course record, set in 2009, may also qualify for cash rewards.

Registration opens Saturday, Aug. 31, at 9 a.m. and closes at 10 a.m. The time trials begin at 10:30 a.m., and short track racing will start at 4 p.m. Registration for Sunday begins at 8:30 p.m. that evening.

Cross-country racing begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday and ends at 1:35 p.m.

T-shirts are given to all registrants and awards are given in the different age classes.

There is also a kid’s race suitable for ages 3-11 with prizes for all who participate.

Several door prizes will also be given away.

Participants of all ages will be riding on the same course; distances and amounts of laps however are different. Costs vary depending on the event.
