Fargo may have postponed their Shrine Circus due to flooding, but the annual event is still on schedule to arrive in Detroit Lakes on Thursday.

Circus Co-chairman and Advertising Chair Jack Longfors said some of the circus acts will be the same as they are every year, but this year will feature a grizzly bear, one of only a few in the country.

Other animal acts include a Bengal tiger and an elephant.

"You always have to have elephants," Longfors said.

Animal acts are becoming harder to come by, however, he added. The Shriners' circus promoter had a hard time booking them this year, Longfors said.

Other acts will include a comedy car, which Longfors said has been an entertaining feature in the past; a low tightwire act; and a "quick change artist."

"The low tightwire act guy does a somersault on the tightwire, I think he's one of the only guys in the country that can do it," Longfors said.

In addition to the main event, an intermission in the middle of the show will keep kids busy with elephant rides, pictures with the grizzly bear, and miniature horse rides.

Detroit Lakes planners decided not to reschedule the show because of recent weather conditions, Longfors said, because when Fargo did, they ran into problems rebooking the acts. He said this particular circus starts in Dickinson, N.D., and travels to Bismarck, Jamestown and Fargo before coming to Detroit Lakes.

Dickinson's circus, which was scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled, he said, and Fargo's has been postponed by about two weeks.

Thursday's Shrine Circus will put on three shows at the Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Central Market.

Proceeds from the ticket sales go to fund the local Shriners as well as their charitable organizations.

Major sponsors this year include Forest Hills Golf Course, Central Market, Northwoods Photography, Mid Central Ice, the Clubhouse Hotel, Mary Newman and the Fargo Jet Center.
